In London, the centrally located Earls Court district–where the Mowbray Court Hotel in South Kensington calls home–has become known as a bit of a Shopper’s Paradise. Here, you’ll find everything from upscale couture to trendy mass-market fashion, as well as toys, furnishings, electronics, and plenty of cafés for you to stop and refresh yourself in before resuming your retail rampage!
As always, there will be some shopping experiences that stand head and shoulders above the rest; we’ve got recommendations for some can’t-miss retail therapy destinations.
- Westfield Centre
Soon to be Europe’s largest shopping mall, Westfield Centre is home to over three hundred shops encompassing everything you could possibly need. Sportswear, intimates, grooming, optical, and more can be found within Westfield’s expansive walls. You’ll also find no end of entertainment and dining options to choose from–when you’re done shopping, you don’t even need to leave the premises to have a delightful evening!
With a bus stop and the Shepherd’s Bush Tube station right on its doorstep, Westfield Centre is easy to access and a great way to spend a day.
- Harrods
A legend in British retail experiences, Harrods has long been an iconic name in London’s shopping scene. This luxury department store has been around since 1905, and it is a true cave of lush wonders; with its unique and opulent decor and array of posh goods, Harrods has been featured in film and television, served the luminous likes of Agatha Christie, Princess Diana, and Charlie Chaplin, and been an aspirational icon.
From Earls Court Station, simply take the Piccadilly (Cockfosters) Tube line to Knightsbridge Station, then walk down Brompton Road to Harrods–at one million square feet of retail space and festooned in their signature green awnings, you won’t be able to miss it.
- Royal Trinity Hospice Charity Shop
This one might sound like an odd choice if you’re not familiar with the phenomenon of the charity shops of Great Britain. However, charity shops are indeed that–a real cultural phenomenon of the country, so you’ve got to pop by at least one during your visit for an authentic experience. The Royal Trinity Hospice shop is right in Earls Court, just off the main road and is one of the best rated charity shops in the area, lauded for their stylish decor, orderly layout, great selection and reasonable prices.
It’s also easy to get to–just exit the Mowbray Court, turn left and walk up to Earls Court Road. Take another left and walk a block; there’s the Royal Hospice shop, right next to Nando’s. You’re there in under five minutes.

- Portobello Road Market
Well, if you’re coming to London, you really can’t miss the legendary Portobello Road Market. Talk about iconic! Located in Notting Hill–yes, that Notting Hill–this is where vintage hounds, collectibles freaks, and lovers of interesting decor can find real treasure. There are also plenty of produce and food stalls, so you won’t perish of hunger while you haggle with the vendors. Picturesque and colourful, Paddington Bear’s favourite shopping destination should certainly be one you experience as well.
From Earls Court Station, hop onto the District (Edgware Road) Line going to Notting Hill Gate. Hop off and enjoy a leisurely ten minute walk through the vibrant neighbourhood before you get to the market.
- Alfies Antique Market
If treasures of the past are your game, then Alfies Antique Market is the name to remember. Housed in an unprepossessing building most closely resembling an old warehouse, once you pass through the doors, you’ll find yourself in a sprawling, four-floor antiques wonderland.
Precious old porcelain, vintage clothing, antique jewellery, charming old bits of bric-a-brac and more can be found amongst the dozens and dozens of vendors that call Alfies home. Prices are often reported to be a touch eye-watering, but the selection of beautiful old wonders is genuinely marvellous.
From Earls Court Station, take the District Line to Edgware Road; from there, it’s a further ten minutes or so walk up to Alfies, where we recommend you take a breather before plunging into the fray.
